Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship

NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center (NYPWC) is a leader in clinical care, research, and education related to epilepsy, electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), neuromuscular disorders, intraoperative monitoring, and other aspects of neurophysiology. We offer one-year ACGME-accredited clinical neurophysiology fellowship positions at NYPWC and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Comprehensive training in clinical neurophysiology appropriate for ABPN-CN certification in clinical neurophysiology is provided to all fellows. The program is designed primarily for applicants with a strong interest in EEG and intraoperative monitoring. Subspecialty options are:

  • Adult EEG and Intraoperative Monitoring Track
  • Pediatric EEG/Epilepsy Track (Does not rotate through MSKCC)

For foreign applicants, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital ONLY sponsors J-1 visas through ECFMG.

Details

Both the adult and pediatric EEG fellows are responsible for supervised reading of routine EEGs (about 1,500 per year, including adults, children, and infants), evoked potentials (about 300 per year), and video-EEGs (some 600 per year). They also participate in related special procedures, such as Wada tests, intraoperative electrocorticography, and programming of vagal nerve stimulators, deep brain stimulators, and responsive neurostimulator. EEG fellows also participate in the care of inpatients undergoing video monitoring in the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center's outpatient clinics.

Adult EEG/epilepsy fellows divide their time between both the NYPWC and MSKCC campuses. Intraoperative monitoring procedures (IOM) -- including cortical mapping via evoked potentials and direct cortical stimulation, EMG monitoring of skull base procedures, and EP monitoring of spinal cord procedures -- occur at the MSKCC campus. In addition, adult EEG fellows participate in weekly outpatient brain tumor epilepsy clinics while at the MSKCC campus.

Pediatric EEG/epilepsy fellows concentrate on inpatient and outpatient management of pediatric seizure disorders. Up to 10 months of the year are spent on the inpatient pediatric epilepsy service (including video-EEG reading, intracranial EEGs with sEEG and grids/strips), with the remainder on the adult epilepsy service. Fellows will also do one session of clinic per week with a focus on seeing refractory epilepsy patients. EEG/EP, IOM, and EMG activities are part of the curriculum in order to meet clinical neurophysiology criteria for board eligibility.

In addition, broad training in clinical neurophysiology for all fellows is assured via an extensive didactic program that includes weekly clinical neurophysiologic teaching conferences, surgical epilepsy conferences, and journal clubs that cover the full range of standard neurophysiologic procedures.

Application Information

Applicants must have completed an ACGME-approved residency in Neurology at the time of entrance into the program (typically July 1), and must be board-eligible in the Neurology section of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Applications must be made through the AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service https://www.aamc.org/services/eras-for-institutions/program-staff (ERAS). Fellowship positions are selected through the National Resident Matching Program https://www.nrmp.org/fellowship-applicants/participating-fellowships/epi... (NRMP). Angela Curcio, M.D.
View Bio

Angela Curcio was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. She received her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and Italian Language and Culture at the University of Pittsburgh. She then earned her medical degree at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.  Most recently, she graduated child neurology residency at Columbia University Medical Center. Angela is currently on the residents and fellows editorial board for the Journal of Child Neurology and a member of the AAN Enhanced Resident Leadership Program. In her spare time, Angela enjoys playing tennis, running, going to comedy shows, and baking Italian cookies.

Mikel Shea Ehntholt, M.D.

Shea was born in Florida and raised in North Jersey and has traveled across the world by way of his military service. He enjoys being outdoors, running in Central Park, and exploring NYC. He is an enthusiastic NY Mets fan and was named after their old stadium. Within Neurology, he is especially interested in traumatic brain injury.

Tahsin Khan, M.D.
View Bio

Tahsin is originally from Albany, New York and stayed local when she attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for her undergraduate degree, with a major in Biology/Science and Technology studies. She went on to earn her medical degree from Stony Brook University Hospital. She also stayed on for adult neurology residency at Stony Brook University Hospital. She is particularly interested in status epilepticus management. She is also very involved and passionate about resident/physician wellness and hopes to be more involved in this type of work in the future. When not working, she spends her free time reading, writing, and running outdoors.

Ashwin Malhotra, M.D.
